C. H. Reilly

Charles Herbert Reilly was born in Stoke Newington, London, on 4 March 1874 and studied mechanical science at Queen’s College, Cambridge from where he graduated in 1895.  From 1896 to 1898 he worked in the office of his father, the architect Charles Reilly. He also studied at King’s College, London from 1896 to 1898. He then went to the office of John Belcher (1841-1913) as an improver from 1898 to 1900 .

Reilly was briefly in partnership with Charles Stanley Peach in 1900-01. In 1901 set up an independent in London. In 1904 he was appointed Roscoe Professor of Architecture at Liverpool University, a post he held in 1933. His architectural work included cottages at Port Sunlight (1905) and the interior of St Barnabus in Dalston, London (1910-11).  He was also consultant architect for the design of the Peter Jones store in Sloane Street, London.

Reilly was elected a Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects (FRIBA) in 1912 and was awarded the RIBA Royal Gold Medal for Architecture in 1943. He wrote extensively on architecture.  In 1944 he was knighted for his services to architecture. He died in Westminster, London on 2 February 1948.
