Rigby, Alfred 1880 - ?

Alfred Rigby was born in Rusholme, Manchester, Lancashire, England in 1880. He was articled to Jesse Horsfall (1859-1910) in Manchester from 1898 to 1902 and remained with him as his assistant for a further year. He also attended Manchester Technical School and Manchester School of Art.  He worked as an assistant to Daniel Powell (1862-?) in Liverpool from 1903 to 1906; and to Francis Eldred Lodge Harris (1864-1924) in 1906-07.

Rigby established his own architectural practice in Manchester in 1906. For a period he was in partnership with Reginald Arthur Hyatt Phipp (1884-1946) and (?) Oliver in the architectural firm Rigby, Oliver & Phipp at 92 Market Street, Manchester.  In 1909 the practice submitted an entry for a competition to design an to extension to Grimsby Town Hall.  Their designs are illustrated in British Competitions in Architecture vol. 3, no. 32, August 1910 (pp. 224-228).

Rigby was elected a Licentiate of the Royal Institute of British Architects (LRIBA) in 1910. His address was given as Byland, Oswald Road, Alexandra Park, Manchester in 1910; 92 Market Street, Manchester in 1910 and 1914;  5 Arnold Road Alexandra Rd, Manchester in 1911; 1, Ferens Avenue, Newland, Hull in 1914; and York Chambers, 77 Lowgate, Hull in 1914 and 1915.

Note: Rigby is not listed in the Kalendar of the Royal Institute of British Architects after the 1915-16 edition or in Who's Who in Architecture after the 1914 edition.
