Salter, Stephen, Jnr. 1862 - 1956

Stephen Salter, Jnr. [also known as Stephen Salter] was born in Oxford, Oxfordshire, England on 30 May 1862 and was the son of the architect Stephen Salter (1825-1896).  He was articled to Frederick Codd, City Surveyor in Oxford, in 1877. He also attended the John Ruskin Drawing School in Oxford.  After working as an assistant in various architectural offices in London, he established his own architectural practice in Ryde, Isle of Wight, Hampshire in 1885. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects (FRIBA) in 1892.   In 1893 he formed a partnership, Salter & Davy, with Robert Clifton Davy of Maidenhead, Berkshire.  By 1899 they had established an office in Oxford, Oxfordshire.  The partnership was dissolved in 1906 and thereafter, Salter practised alone. He remained in Oxford until 1914 when he returned to the Isle of Wight.  He produced little architectural work after that date.

Salter's address was given as 63 Union Street, Ryde, Isle of Wight in 1892; Pondwell, Seaview, Isle of Wight in 1892 and 1914; 2 and 3 High Street, Oxford in 1893 and 1914; Park Crescent, Oxford in 1914; and Albion Villa, The Diggings, St Helens, Isle of Wight in 1956.   He died in St. Helen's Isle of Wight, Hampshire on 19 September 1956.

Note: it is sometimes stated that his father was the architect Stephen Salter (1825?-1896). This is is incorrect.  His father's was Stephen Salter (1835–1937), a boat builder.
