Salwey, Jasper Philip 1884 - 1956

Jasper Philip Salwey was born in London, England in July 1884 and was articled to William Ravenscroft (1848-1943) in Reading, Berkshire, England from 1901 to 1905. He then worked for a year as an assistant to Arnold Bidlake Mitchell (1863-1944) in London. He passed his qualifying exam as an architect in 1906 and was elected an Associate of the Royal Institute of British Architects (ARIBA) later year. Little is known about his subsequent career as an architect, apart from the fact that he worked for Messrs Haddock & Pruen in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire in 1923.

In addition to his work as an architect Salway was also a painter. He exhibited at the New English Art Club in London; and at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool. He was the author of several books on sketching including 'The art of drawing in lead pencil' (London: Batsford, 1921); and 'Sketching in lead pencil for architects and others' (London: Batsford, 1926).

Two sketches by Salwey are illustrated in Drawing & Design vol.5, no.12, April 1926 (pp.416, 417).

During World One and for four years after, he served as a 2nd lieutenant in the Labour Corps.

Salwey died in Bournemouth, Dorset in 1956 and was buried at St. Mary's Church in Wareham, Dorset on 31 May 1956
