Hubert Savage was born in Islington, Middlesex [now London], England on 1 July 1884 and was articled to Edward Harding Payne (1866-1951) in London from 1900 to 1903. He then worked as an assistant to William Henry Burt (1868?-1937) in 1904. In 1905 he was employed as Clerk of Works at Aberystwyth Library, following which he worked as assistant to William Stewart (1867-1940) in 1906: and to John Slater (1847-1924) from 1907. In 1910 Savage qualified as an architect and in December 1910 was elected an Associate of the Royal Institute of British Architects (ARIBA).
In 1912 Savage emigrated to Canada and settled in Victoria, British Columbia, where he established an architectural practice in November 1912. He worked alone until 1928 when he formed a partnership with Percy Leonard James (1878-1970) as James & Savage in Victoria. They were forced to dissolve the partnership in May 1933 because of the deep financial recession that hit North America in the early 1930s. Thereafter, Savage and James worked independently. Savage was vice-president of the Architectural Institute of British Columbia from 1931 to 1934. He died in Victoria, British Columbia on 28 April 1955.
