Scott, James Buyers 1882 - 1956

James Buyers Scott [commonly known as James B. Scott] was born in Kennett, Forfarshire, Scotland on 22 December 1882 and studied at Gray's School of Art in Aberdeen between 1898 and 1905. From 1891 to 1899 he was articled to William Kelly (1861-1944) in Aberdeen.

By 1908 Scott had moved to London, where with Clough Williams-Ellis (1883-1978) he formed the partnership Williams-Ellis & Scott in c.1908. The partnership was dissolved in 1911.   Scott was an Evening Class Master at the Architectural Association in London in 1914.

Scott exhibited at the Royal Academy in London; and at the Royal Hibernian Academy in London in 1920.

During World War One he served as a lieutenant in the Army.

His address was given as Arundel House, Victoria Embankment, London (1910); and 18 Maddox Street, London (1920). He died in Folkestone, Kent on 23 August 1956

Note: in the Dictionary of Scottish Architects 1660-1980 [link below] states that Scott was a member of the Art Workers Guild, however, the list of members of the AWG compiled for Beauty Awakening, the Centenary Exhibition of the Art Workers Guild 1884-1984 (1984) does not include his name. It includes an architect called James Bower Scott.  One of these two sources, therefore, is evidently incorrect
