Shayler, Frank Hearn 1867 - 1954

Frank Hearn Shayler was born in Banbury, Oxfordshire, England in 1867 and was articled to Edwin Lawrence Elgar (1855-?) from 1884, and with Elgar & Cole in Ramsgate, Kent and Broadstairs, Kent. In the late 1880s he also attended science and art schools in Banbury and London, and was awarded a Silver Medal for measured drawing by South Kensington Art Schools in c.1888.  After working as a freelance draughtsman from 1880 to 1890, he was employed as an assistant by William Henry Spaull (1839-1915) in Oswestry, Shropshire in 1890 and 1892, and to a Mr. Baugh in Wrexham, Wales.

Shayler commenced independent practice in Welshpool, Wales in 1893 and was briefly in partnership with Spaull that year. He was later also in partnership with (?) Madoc-Jones and with Thomas Ridge (1872-1940) in Oswestry.  From 1899 he practised in Shrewsbury, Shropshire and in the 1930s was in partnership with Francis Milverton Drake (1851-1929) as Shayler & Drake [dissolved in 1933] and John Stuart Dilks as Shayler & Dilks.

Shayler was elected a Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects (FRIBA) in 1907.  His address was given as Clive Chambers, Shrewsbury, Shropshire in 1907 and 1920: 16, Pride Hill, Shrewsbury in 1914; Gateway Chambers, Shrewsbury in 1930; and Dana Chambers, Castle Gates, Shrewsbury in 1935 and 1939.  He died on 26 June 1954. His address at the time of his death was The Red House, The Mount, Shrewsbury.

Rhyl County School; Worn Public Library; numerous banking premises for the London and Provincial Bank Co., Ltd., and the National Provincial Bank of England, Ltd.: Riding School and offices for the Shropshire Territorial Association.
