Simmons, Charles Evelyn 1879 - 1952

Charles Evelyn Simmons, was born in Hampstead, London, in 1879. Between 1900 and 1903 [or 1899-1903 - sources differ] he was articled to Horace Field (1861-1948) and remained as his assistant from 1903 to 1905. During these years he also attended the Architectural Association in London.  In 1905 he formed a partnership with Field as Horace Field & Simmons.

A drawing and a plan of a house in Suffolk by Horace Field & Simmons and a photograph of a dull bronze fireplace designed by Horace Field & Simmons, architects, and executed by the Teale Fireplace Co. are illustrated in 'The Studio Yearbook of Decorative Art' 1907 (pp.21, 107), and a drawing of a house in Hampstead, London designed by Simmons is illustrated in 'The Studio Yearbook of Decorative Art' 1923 (p.13).

The partnership was dissolved in 1915 and between 1915 and 1919 Simmons worked as an assistant in the Ministry of Health's Architects Department. He was in independent practice from 1919 onwards, first in Westminster, London, and then, from 1939, in Barnet.

Simmons was elected a Licentiate of the Royal Institute of British Architects (LRIBA) in 1911 and was admitted a Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects (FRIBA) in 1925. He was also elected a member of the Architecture Club in 1924.  He exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1923-24. Simmons died on 31 March 1952.
