Sinclair, Colin 1879 - 1957

Colin Sinclair was born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1879. He was articled to Hugh Barclay (1828-1892) and David Barclay (1846-1917) of H. & D. Barclay in Glasgow from 1892 to 1897, and remained with them as an assistant until 1911. He also attended the University of Glasgow, West of Scotland Technical College and Glasgow School of Art. In 1911 he became a junior partner at H. & D. Barclay, and, following the death of David Barclay in 1917, sole partner in the firm.  In c.1919 Sinclair formed a partnership, Sinclair & Campbell, with John Begg Campbell (1882-?).  The partnership was dissolved in 1940 and Sinclair subsequently worked alone in Glasgow.

Sinclair was elected a Licentiate of the Royal Institute of British Architects (LRIBA) in 1910 and a Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects (FRIBA) in 1921. In 1932 he was awarded a PhD by the University of Glasgow for his thesis Scoto-Celtic Architecture: Its Place among the Styles with Notes on Celtic Decorative Art and Gaelic Glossary of Architectural and Building Terms. He was the author of The Thatched Houses of the Old Highlands (1953).

Sinclair's address was given as 43, McLean Street, Govan, Glasgow, Scotland in 1892; 10 Gower Street, Glasgow in 1910 and c.1913; 245 St. Vincent Street, Glasgow in 1910 and c.1920; 35 Clifford Street, Glasgow in 1914 and 1923; 440, Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow, Scotland in 1924; 121, West Regent Street, Glasgow in c.1929 and 1953; and St. Margaret's", 50 Ralston Avenue, Crookston, Renfrewshire in 1926 and 1957. He died at this address on 26 October 1957.
