Souttar, James Augustus 1866 - 1952

James Augustus Souttar was born in Aberdeen, Scotland on 26 December 1866. He was articled to his father, James Souttar (1840-1921) in Aberdeen from 1882 to 1889, and remained with him as his assistant until 1892.  He also worked as an an assistant to Alfred Swash (1860-1939) in Newport, Monmouthshire, Wales from 1890 to c.1893, following which he returned to his father's practice and worked as his clerk until 1897 when he joined him in partnership as James Souttar & Son.  The partnership was dissolved the following year and J. A. Souttar moved to London where he established an independent practice in 1899.  He was Architect to the British and Foreign School Society and the Cambrian Coast Hotels Co. He also acted for the War Office as Supervising Valuer to the Western Command, from 1919 to 1925.

He attended Gray's School of Art in Aberdeen from 1885 to 1889 and later the South Kensington Schools in London.  He was elected a Member of the Society of Architects (MSA) in 1901 and a Licentiate of the Royal Institute of British Architects (LRIBA) in 1910. He was admitted a Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects (FRIBA) in 1925.

His address was given as Beech Lodge, Aberdeen, Scotland in 1885; 42, Union Street, Aberdeen, Scotland in c.1897; St George Hanover Square, London in 1901; 41, Bishopsgate Street, London and 51, Eardley Crescent, London in 1910; 62, Bishopsgate, London  and 17, Wimpole Street, London in 1914; 15, Upper Wimpole Street, London in 1922 and 1926; 56 Victoria Street, London in 1930; 70 Victoria Street, London in 1935; and 20 Kew Bridge Court, London in 1938. and 1939.  Souttar is listed as a retired FRIBA in the 1939-1940 edition of R.I.B.A. Kalendar. He died in Elie, Fife, Scotland on 24 May 1952.
