Harold Wolseley Spicer

Harold Wolseley Spicer was born in Watford, Hertfordshire, England on 2 November 1882 and was articled to Sir Charles Pryor Ayres (1851?-1914) in Watford in 1899. He also attended Regent Street Polytechnic and King's College, London. He won the Polytechnic Silver Medallion for Architectural Design.

Spicer emigrated to South Africa in 1903 and began working as an architect in Natal. He also taught at Natal Technical College.  In 1912 he returned to England and continued his architectural studies in London and Paris.  He went back to South Africa in 1913. He worked for the Public Wprks Department in Natal until 1917 when he moved to Johannesburg. The following year he registered as a member of the Association of Transvaal Architects.  After working in various architectural offices, he established his own practice in Johannesburg in 1921.

Spicer retired as an architect in 1954.  He died on 13 July 1964.

Work by Spicer included a bronze war memorial plaque for the boardroom of the Johannesburg Consolidated Investment Corporation head office in Fox Street in 1923; mseveral theatres in collaboration with Percy Rogers Cooke (1880-1958), including the Colosseum Theatre in Johannesburg and the Playhouse in Durban, in the 1930s; racing stables for Len Oates in Germiston; and the Hotel La Crete at Uvongo, Natal.
