Samuel Stevenson was born in Belfast, Ireland on 27 November 1859. After studying at the Royal Academical Institution in Belfast, he trained as an architect in the office of Young & & Mackenzie in Belfast. In 1886 he commenced independent practice at 41 Royal Avenue, Belfast. Following World War One he formed the partnership Samuel Stevenson & Sons with his sons John Hamilton Stevenson (1890-1950) and William James Hamilton Stevenson (1894?-1952) . Following their father's death in Jordanstown, Co. Antrim, on 23 February 1924. They continued the practice.
