Stienlet, Pascal Joseph 1878 - 1950

Pascal Joseph Stienlet was born in North Shields, Northumberland, England in 1878. He was articled to William Hope in Newcastle-upon-Tyne from 1894 to 1898 and remained with him as his assistant until 1904. He also attended Armstrong College in Newcastle upon Tyne and studied architecture on the Continent including at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris.  He commenced practice in North Shields and Newcastle-upon-Tyne in 1904. He was subsequently in partnership with Henry Gibson (c.1854-?)  from 1904 to 1916; with Herbert Selwyn Dixon (1880-1940) from 1918 to 1921; with Joseph Charlton Maxwell (1869?-1930) as Stienlet & Maxwell from 1922 to 1930; and with his son, Vincente Gustave Stienlet (1910-1990) as Pascal J. Stienlet & Son from 1932 to 1950.

Stienlet was one of the leading designers of cinemas in Britain and is said to have designed some 200 such buildings.  He was elected a Licentiate of the Royal Institute of British Architects (LRIBA) in 1911 and a Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects (FRIBA) in 1938.

Stienlet's address was given as 49 Lindesfarne Terrace, North Shields, and 21 Dean Street, Newcastle-upon-Tyne in 1911; 56 Camden Street, North Shields in 1911 and 1914; "Overdene", Monkseaton, near Newcastle-upon-Tyne in 1914; "Harvey House", 14, Savllle Row, Newcastle-on-Tyne in 1923 and 1939; and Causey House, Gosforth, Northumberland in 1950. He died on 13 April 1950.
