Stokes, David Dominic Scott 1908 - 1990

David Dominic Scott Stokes [also known as David Stokes] was born in Woldingham, Surrey, England on 21 November 1908 and was the son of the architect Leonard Aloysius Scott Stokes (1858-1925) and trained at the Architectural Association in London until 1930.  He was then briefly in partnership with Peter Fleetwood Hesketh (1905-1985) in London. In c.1932 he joined the London and Aberdeen-based architectural firm A. Marshall Mackenzie & Son as a partner, and for a period worked in their Aberdeen office.  He left the practice in 1936 and subsequently worked independently in London.

Stokes was elected an Associate of the Royal Institute of British Architects (ARIBA) in 1931. He was made a Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects (FRIBA) in 1939

His address was given as 1 Milne Court Terrace, Temple, London, and 3 Mulberry Walk, Church Street, Chelsea, London in 1932; and 3 Cochrane Street, London in 1936 and 1990.  He died in London on 28 April 1990

Work by Stokes whilst in partnership with A. Marshall Mackenzie & Son included the Capitol Cinema on Union Street, Aberdeen (1932); Jackson's Garage at Bon Accord Square, Aberdeen (1933); Halifax Building Society at 393-399, Union Street, Aberdeen (1934); Littleways, on Baillieswells Road, Aberdeen (1934); and a house in Banchory, Kincardineshire for a Mrs Stuart (1934). After leaving the A. Marshall Mackenzie & Son partnership he designed  3-5 Cochrane Street, a pair of semi-detached houses in Hampstead, London, one of which was for himself.  He also designed The Holy Name & Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, London (1958); Our Lady of Walsingham Church in London (1959); and Our Lady of the Visitation Roman Catholic Church in Greenford, Middlesex (1960-61).
