Strange, Charles Hilbert 1867 - 1952

Charles Hilbert Strange was born in Tunbridge Wells, Kent, England on 27 December 1867 and was articled to his father, Charles Mathew Strange (1832–1925), in Tunbridge Wells in 1882. From 1887 he worked as an assistant to Robert Griggs (1843?-1915) in London. He also attended classes at the Architectural Association Schools in London and was awarded the Architectural Association Silver Medal (Essays), and prizes for Building Construction and Elementary Design. He qualified as an architect in 1890 and set up his own independent practice in Tunbridge Wells in 1898.  He was in partnership with Fergus Colesworthy Gregor Grant (1906-1984) as Strange & Grant in the 1930s.

Strange was elected an Associate of the Royal Institute of British Architects (ARIBA) in 1891 and a Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects (FRIBA) in 1920. He was the author of Mount Pleasant Congregational Church, Tunbridge Wells : a sketch of its history, 1830-1930 (Tunbridge Wells : A. J. Pelton, 1930) and Nonconformity in Tunbridge Wells (Tunbridge Wells : Courier Printing and Publishing, 1949).

His address was given as 4 Cumberland Gardens, Tunbridge Wells, Kent, in 1881; 37 Northwold Road, Stoke Newington, London in 1890; 30 Grosvenor Road, Tunbridge Wells, Kent in 1900; 20 Dudley Road, Tunbridge Wells, Kent in 1906 and 1936; and 2 Beulah Road, Tunbridge Wells, Kent, in 1939.  He died in Tunbridge Wells, Kent on 30 March 1952
