Stratton, Arthur James 1872 - 1955

Arthur James Stratton was born in Barnes, Surrey [now London], England on 21 September 1872. He was articled to Arthur Edmund Street (1855-1938) from 1889 to 1891 and in 1893-94 was an improver with him. He then worked as an assistant in the offices of Leonard Aloysius Scott Stokes (1858-1925) in 1893-94, Walter John Nash Millard (1854-1936), Robert Alexander Briggs (1858-1916), and Francis George Fielden Hooper (1859-1938). He also attended classes at the Royal Academy in London from 1894 to 1897, and at the Architectural Association Schools in London.  

Stratton qualified as an architect in 1895 and commenced independent practice in Liverpool in 1898.   He was a "demonstrator" in architectural history at Liverpool University College from 1895 to 1900 and subsequently taught at King's College School of Architecture, University of London, later absorbed into the Bartlett School of Architecture, University College, London.  Stratton was a noted historian of Renaissance, Baroque and Tudor architecture and was the author of several publications on architectural history

He was elected an Associate of the Royal Institute of British Architects (ARIBA) in 1896 and a Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects (FRIBA) in 1913. He was also a Fellow of the Society of Architects and editor of The Builder in 1912-13.  He died in Pulborough, Sussex on 9 April 1955.
