Henry Tanner [also known as Henry Tanner Jr.] was born on 26 June 1876 and studied at the University of London; the Royal Academy Schools, from 1897 to 1902; and the Architectural Association Schools in London. He was articled to his father, the architect Sir Henry Tanner (1849-1935) in 1894 and remained with him as his assistant. He also worked as an assistant to Sir Aston Webb (1849-1930) and in London, in H.M. War Office in London. Tanner commenced practice as an architect in 1910 in partnership with his father, William Battley Dukes (1876-1942), Edward Thorne Dowling and William Hugh Tanner.
Architectural projects by Tanner included the Raleigh Cycle Co. factory in Nottingham; the Bank of New Zealand at Moorgate, London; Jays & Parr's Bank at Oxford Circus, London; Strand Palace Hotel and Regent Palace Hotel in London; and various retail and commercial premises in Regent Street, London.
Tanner was the author of 'Some Architectural Works of Inigo Jones' with H. Inigo Triggs (London: Batsford, 1901) 'English Interior Woodwork of the XVI, XVII and XVIII Centuries (London: Batsford, 1902), and 'Old English Doorways' with W. Galsworthy Davie (London: Batsford, 1903).
Tanner was elected an Associate of the Royal Institute of British Architects (ARIBA) in 1899 and a Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects (FRIBA) in 1907. In 1909-10 he was President of the Architectural Association. He died on 22 January 1947.
