Thomas Taylor was born in Oldham, Lancashire, England in 1858. He was articled to Edward Potts (1839-1909) in Oldham from 1874 to 1879 and remained with him as his assistant until 1884. He commenced independent practice as an architect in Oldham in 1884 and was in partnership with Ernest Simister (1877-1959) as Taylor & Simister from 1907, and with his son, John Alexander Chisholm Taylor (1890-?) from 1919.
Thomas Taylor was elected a Licentiate of the Royal Institute of British Architects (LRIBA) in 1911 and a Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects (FRIBA) in 1929. He was also a Fellow of the Manchester Society of Architects and a member of the Oldham Society of Architects of which he was President. His address was given as 29, Queen Street, Oldham in 1911 and 1930, and The Manse, Waterhead, Oldham in 1914.
