Thomas Lumsden Taylor was born in Blackfriars, Glasgow, Scotland in 1881 and trained as an architect with Honeyman & Keppie and Honeyman, Keppie & Mackintosh in Glasgow from 1897 to 1901. He then worked as an assistant to Honeyman, Keppie & Mackintosh from 1902 to 1904; to James Miller (1860-1947) in Glasgow in 1904-05, and to Rowand Anderson & Paul in Glasgow in 1905-06.
In 1906, with David Bateman Hutton (1880-1959), he established the architectural practice Hutton & Taylor at 148 Woodlands Road, Glasgow, which was to be their office until at least the early 1930s.
Taylor was elected a Licentiate of the Royal Institute of British architects (LRIBA) in 1910, and a Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects (FRIBA) in 1915.
Ill-health forced Taylor to retire from practice in 1943. He died in Glasgow on 1 August 1944.
