Gordon Lewis Thorne was born in Southampton, Hampshire, England on 1 August 1888. He gave his occupation as Architect and Surveyor in the 1911 England and Wales Census, however, it is not known where or from whom he received his training.
He lived and worked in Southampton throughout his career. During the 1930s was a partner in the Southampton firm Weston, Burnett & Thorne. He was elected a Licentiate of the Royal Institute of British Architects (LRIBA) in 1932.
Drawings and plans of a house designed by him are illustrated in Designs for One Hundred Ideal £1,000 Houses. Being copies of the hundred best designs entered in the 1912 Daily Mail Architects' Competition (1912 p.103).
Thorne died in Southampton on 29 November 1958.
