Gerald Unsworth was born in Westminster, London, England on 2 July 1883 and was articled to his father, William Frederick Unsworth (1851-1912) from 1902. He then worked as an assistant to Frank Thomas Baggallay (1855-1930), and to Thomas Edward Collcutt (1840-1924).
From 1906 he was in partnership with his father, and from 1910 with Harry Inigo Triggs (1876-1923) as Unsworth & Triggs [also known as Unsworth, Son & Triggs]. In 1920 he formed a partnership with Arthur Christopher Goulder (1884-1963) as Unsworth & Goulder. When, in the late early 1930s, Robert Bostock joined the firm it became Unsworth, Goulder & Bostock.
Unsworth was elected an Associate of the Royal Institute of British Architects (ARIBA) in 1920 and a Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects (FRIBA) in 1923. He died in Hindhead, Surrey, on 24 July 1946.
