Robert Whyte was born in Scotland on 24 December 1873 and was articled to William Leiper (1839-1916) from 1890 to 1897. He also attended Glasgow School of Art and Glasgow Technical College from 1892. He commenced independent practice as an architect on 1898 and was employed as a designer for John Brown & Co.. Ltd., shipbuilders of Clydebank. He practised alone from 1906.
Over a career of nearly 40 years, he designed the interiors of several ships. He also designed some private houses, mainly in Dunbartonshire, Scotland.
He was elected a Licentiate of the Royal Institute of British Architects (LRIBA) in 1912. He died on 22 February 1949.
