Walter, William Walter

William Walter Wood was born in Nottingham, England, on 24 November 1896. He was articled to Frederick Ball (1860-1915) and studied at Nottingham University College, Nottingham School of Art, the Architectural Association School in London, and at Fernand Billery's Atelier in London.

Two photographs, a plan and a brief description of 'Oversound House' in Down Thomas, Devon, designed by Wood are illustrated in 'Decorative Art' 1931 (p.10); a photograph and plan of 'Seathwaite, a house in South Devon designed by Wood are illustrated in 'Decorative Art' 1932 (p.117); a photograph of a semi-circular bay opening on to a terrace at 'White Walls', Torquay, designed by him is illustrated in 'Decorative Art' 1935 (p.20); and two photographs and a description of 'White Walls' in Torquay, Devon, designed by him are illustrated in 'Decorative Art' 1936 (p.35).

In the mid-1920s Wood was Assistant Professor of Architecture at the École Polytechnique Royale at Giza in Cairo, Egypt. Wood worked in India and in 1941 was the founder and Principal of Delhi Polytechnic.  In the late 1940s and early 1950s he lived and worked in Cape Town, South Africa.

He was elected an Associate of the Royal Institute of British Architects (ARIBA) in 1921 and a Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects (FRIBA) in 1931.

Wood's address was given as 1 Parliament Hill, Hampstead, London in 1922; 102 Great Russell Street, London in 1926;  8 Sussex Terrace, Plymouth, Devon in 1929; Oversound House, Down Thomas, Devon in 1932;  257-259 Oxford Street, London in 1934; Gay Bowers Cottage, Danbury, Essex in 1939; 136 Adderley Street, Cape Town, South Africa in 1950; and 19 Keats Grove, Hampstead, London in 1960. He died on 14 May 1982
