Wort, William Sidney 1888 - 1979

William Sidney Wort was born in Romsey, Hampshire, England on 7 February 1888.  

It is not known where, when and with whom he received his training as an architect. He was elected an Associate of the Royal Institute of British Architects (ARIBA) in 1923.

A design for a village hall by Wort is discussed and illustrated (p.136) in 'Some Remarks Upon a Series of Designs for a Village Hall' in 'The Studio' March 1911 pp.132-138.

His address was given as 167 Middle Bridge Road, Romsey, Hampshire in 1901; 10 Greenhill View, Romney, Hampshire in 1911; 28, Waterloo Gardens, Cardiff in 1926; Clive Chambers, Windsor Place, Cardiff, Wales in 1939; and 5 Westville Road, Cardiff, Wales in 1939 and 1979.  He died on 22 March 1979.

Architectural commissions by Wort included the conversion of the Prince of Wales Theatre in Cardiff into a cinema  (1927); rebuilding The Spott Cinema in Cardiff (1930); The Lyric Theatre in Carmarthen, Wales (1934); remodelling the The Gaiety Cinema, Cardiff (1934); Odeon Cinema in Cardiff (1934-35); Monico Theatre in Cardiff (1937); Maxime Cinema in Blackwood, Wales (1938); Ystradgynlais – Sacred Heart church in Swansea (1939); the tne County Cinema in Cardiff (1939)
