Wright, Gordon Lorimer 1876 - 1936

Gordon Lorimer Wright was born in Edinburgh, Scotland on 17 June 1876 and was articled to John James Burnet (1857-1938) of Burnet Son & Campbell in Glasgow, Scotland from 1894 to 1897.  After completing his articles he went to Paris where he studied under Jean-Louis Pascal (1837-1920) at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts from 1897 to 1899.  He then spent spent ten months on a study tour of Italy, following which he visited America in 1900-01 worked in the office of Brainerd Leeds & Russel in Boston, Massachusetts. He returned to Burnet's office in 1901.  

In 1902 Wright established his own independent practice in Edinburgh.  In 1910 he was elected an Associate of the Royal Institute of British Architects (ARIBA). Later that year he emigrated to Canada. He settled in Vancouver, British Columbia where he formed the architectural partnership Wright & McIntyre with the recently-arrived Scottish architect John McIntyre (1879-1957). The partnership was dissolved in 1912 [or 1915 - sources differ].   Wright subsequently worked alone.  He died in Vancouver on 10 June 1936.

Architectural work by Wright included the head office of the Century Insurance Company in Edinburgh (1904); 2 Grant Avenue, Edinburgh (1905); 55-59 Commissioner Street, Creiff, Perthshire (1906-07); 49 King Street, Creiff, Perthshire (1906-07); United Free Church of Scotland Training Institute for Lady Missionaries [Colm College] in Edinburgh (1908-09); Edinburgh Unionist Club in Edinburgh (1910); a  three storey hotel for an unknown client in Lytton, British Columbia (1911) with John McIntyre; and Knox Congregational Church, Vancouver (1914).
