Wylie, Edward Grigg 1885 - 1954

Edward Grigg Wylie was born in Glasgow, Scotland on 11 April 1885 and was articled to William Forsyth McGibbon (1856-1923) in Glasgow from 1900 to 1905 during which time he also attended Glasgow School of Architecture.  Having completed his articles he worked as an assistant to John Burnet & Son in Glasgow from 1906 to 1908.

In 1909 Wylie commenced independent practice as an architect in Glasgow. In 1911, with Alexander ('Sandy') Wright (1877-1972), he formed the architectural partnership Wright & Wylie in Glasgow.  The firm closed during the duration of World War One whilst both partners were on active service in the military. It resumed in 1919.  In 1928 Wylie's nephew, Frederick Robert Wylie (1904-1982) was made a partner in the practice which was then renamed Wylie, Wright & Wylie. The partnership was dissolved in 1935  and in 1936 the Wylies formed a new partnership with George Ferguson Smellie Shanks (1898-1985) as Wylie, Shanks & Wylie. In 1946 Walter Underwood j(1906-1988) joined the practice as a partner, however, the name of the firm wasn't changed to Wylie, Shanks & Underwood until E. G. Wylie's death eight years later.

E. G. Wylie began lecturing in architecture at Glasgow School of Art in 1912 and was made Head of the Department in 1925.  In 1937 he was appointed chief consulting architect to Scottish Industrial Estates Ltd. and soon after became architect to Scottish Oils and Shell Mex Ltd.

He was elected an Associate of the Royal Institute of British Architects (ARIBA) in 1920 and a Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects (FRIBA) in 1937. He died in Glasgow on 31 August 1954
