Tom Yates [also known as Thomas Yates] was born in Leigh, Wigan, Lancashire, England on 7 May 1877. After studying at Manchester Municipal School of Art he was articled to James Caldwell Prestwich (1853-1940) in Leigh from 1893 to 1898. He then worked as an assistant to Thomas Groome Barker (1829?-1915) of Barker & Ellis in Manchester in 1898-99, and to Francis Eldred Lodge Harris (1864-1924) in Manchester from 1899 to 1907.
Yates commenced independent practice as an architect in Leigh in 1908 and was in partnership with his uncle, Richard Greenough, in the firm of Richard Greenough & Son in Leigh. Yates also lectured on building construction at Leigh Technical College. He was elected a Licentiate of the Royal Institute of British Architects (LRIBA) in 1911 and was a Fellow of the Manchester Society of Architects.
His address was given as 5 Queen Street, Leigh in 1891 and 1901; Cheethams, Leigh in 1911; 3 Silk Street, Leigh in 1913 and 1934; 47 Union Street, Leigh in 1917; and 23 Henrietta Street, Leigh in 1935. He died on 23 December 1935. His obituary appeared in the Journal of the Royal Institute of British Architects 1935 p.498
