Newton & Bayley [also known as Newton, Son & Bayley] originated as civil engineering firm established by John Newton (1830-1896) in Manchester in the mid-nineteenth century. In 1883 he formed a partnership with his son, Charles Edward Newton (1859-1937) as John Newton & Son. In c.1895. George Herbert Bayley joined the firm in c.1895.
Following the death of Newton senior in 1896, the firm became Newton & Bayley. Initially the practice focused on civil engineering projects but by the 1900s had begun working on architectural commissions designing a number of country houses in Cheshire and Oxfordshire. "Watling Gate" a house in Timperley, near Manchester designed by them is briefly discussed and illustrated in 'The Studio' March 1910 pp.135, 136. The partnership was dissolved in 1915.
