Baillie Scott, Mackay Hugh (M.H.) 1865 - 1945

Baillie Scott

Mackay Hugh Baillie Scott [commonly known as M.H. Baillie Scott] was born in Beard's Hill, St. Peter's, near Ramsgate in Kent, England, on 23 October 1865. From 1883 to 1885 he studied Scientific Farming and Estate Management at the Royal Agricultural College in Cirencester, Gloucestershire, from where he graduated with honours in science and drawing. He decided not to pursue a career in farming but instead chose architecture and in 1886 was articled to Charles Edward Davis (1827-1902), who in 1886 was appointed the City Architect of Bath in Somerset.

In 1889, having completed his training with Davis, Baillie Scott moved to the Isle of Man. During the next three years he worked in the office of Fred Saunderson, a surveyor and land agent in Douglas, the island's capital. He also attended classes in watercolour, geometry and drawing at the Douglas School of Art, where he met the Manx artist-designer Archibald Knox (1864-1933) with whom he was later to collaborate.

In 1892 Baillie Scott set up an architectural practice at 23 Athol Street in Douglas. His first significant project was 'The Mansion' (1892-93) in Onchan, Isle of Man. This was followed by the 'Red House' (1892-93), a house he built for himself and his family in Douglas and where, from 1893, he ran his practice. From 1895 to to c.1897 he was briefly in partnership with Henry Seton Morris (1869-1915) in the London-based architectural firm Baillie Scott & Seton Morris.

From 1894 onwards Baillie Scott began exhibiting in the Architecture Room at the Royal Academy in London, and, from 1895, became a regular contributor of articles on architecture to 'The Studio' and other magazines. As a result of this exposure he started to receive commissions in England and elsewhere in Europe. One of the most significant of these was an assignment to redecorate and refurbish rooms in the Palace in Darmstadt, Germany of the Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig of Hesse (1897-98). Other projects of note by Baillie Scott during this period included the interior decoration and furnishing of  'Le Nid' (1897-98), a log cabin tree house in Sinaia, Romania, for Queen Marie of Romania; the interiors of Glencrutchery House (1897-98) in Douglas;  Blackwell (1898-99), a house in Bowness, Westmorland, England, for Sir Edward Holt; the White Lodge (1898-99) in Wantage, Berkshire, England; the White House (1899-1900) in Helensburgh, Scotland; Winscombe in Crowborough, Sussex, England (1899-1900); and the Police Station (1900) at Castle Rushen in Castletown, Isle of Man.

In 1901 Baillie Scott moved with his family to Bedford in Bedfordshire, England, and in 1903 relocated his practice to 'The Manor', a house at Fenwick, near Bedford that he had renovated.  In 1905 Alfred Edgar Beresford (1880-1952) joined the practice as chief assistant. The following year saw the publication of Baillie Scott's book 'Houses and Gardens' (London: Newnes, 1906). In 1911 'The Manor' was destroyed by fire and virtually all the practice's records were lost.

Baillie Scott transferred his office to St. John's Street in Bedford and the family moved to 'The Lodge', in Elstow, near Bedford. From 1912 to 1916 Baillie Scott and his family lived first in a flat in Kensington Palace Hotel in London and then in Haslemere, Surrey, and Farnham in Kent before returning to Bedford. Following Baillie Scott's departure for London Beresford maintained the Bedford office. However, with the outbreak of World War One in 1914 the office closed.

Notable projects by Baillie Scott from the years 1901 to 1914 included his award-winning house [unbuilt] for the competition 'Haus eines Kunstfreundes' organised by the 'Zeitschrift für Innendekoration' in 1901; 'Elmwood Cottages' (1904-05) in Letchworth, Hertfordshire; Heather Cottage (1904-06) at Sunningdale, Berkshire; 'Bill House' (1906-07) in Selsey-on-Sea, Sussex; Kirkstead Church (1907) in Godstone, Surrey; 'Waldbühl' (1907-11); in Uzwil, Switzerland for Thodor Bühler; 'White Cottage' (1908) at Sudbury Hill in Harrow, Middlesex; 29, 30 and 10 Meadway, and 22 Hampstead Way (1908), Hampsead Garden Suburb, London; 'Manderville' (1909) in Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire; 'Home Orchard' (1909) in Sidmouth, Devon; a pair of cottages in Gidea Park (1910-11), Romford, Essex; a house in Laskowicze, Witebsk, Poland (1912-13), for M.W. Chludzindski; a house in Bexhill-on Sea, Sussex (1913) for Sir Boverton Redwood; and 'Gyrt-Howe' (1914) in Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, for J.M. Edmonds.  I

In 1919 Baillie Scott reopened his practice at Gray's Inn, London, with Beresford as his partner in Baillie Scott & Beresford. In 1921 Baillie Scott was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (FRIBA). In 1930 the Baillie Scott & Beresford office moved to Bedford Row in London. In 1933 a new edition of 'Houses and Gardens,' co-authored by Baillie Scott and Beresford, was published by Architecture Illustrated, London. In 1939, following the death of his wife, Baillie Scott closed his architectural practice and during the Blitz of 1941 the office in Bedford Row was destroyed in a bombing raid and all the records were lost.

During the years 1919-39 the practice of Baillie Scott & Beresford designed some 130 buildings, most of which were constructed. Architectural projects from this period included 'Buckleberry Grange' (1919-20) at Buckleberry Common, near Reading in Berkshire; 'The Tudors (1919-20) in Gerrard's Cross, Buckinghamshire; 'Greenways' (1922) at Kippington in Sevenoaks, Kent, for Sir Guy Motterbower; 'Squerryes' (1923) in Cambridge, Cambridgeshire for G.E.T. Wilson; 'Three Elms' (1923) at Kippington in Sevenoaks, Kent for D.L. Wallis; Cory Lodge (1924) in the University Botanical Gardens in Cambridge, Cambridgeshire; New Hall at Bembridge School (1924-27) in Bembridge School, Isle of Wight; 'Hadleigh' (1926) in Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, for Professor Sir Frank Engledon; 'Witham' (1929) in Seal, Kent, for Messrs G.E. Wallis; 'Casey Barn' (1931-32) in Esher, Surrey for Messrs G.E. Wallis; and 'Clobb Copse' (1936-38) in Beaulieu, Hampshire, for John Ehrmann.   In addition to his work as an architect, Baillie Scott designed furniture, notably for John P. White's Pyghtle Works between the late 1890s and c.1905 and later for Storey & Co.

In addition he produced designs for wallpaper, stained glass, fireplaces, embroideries and metalwork.  He also painted. His paintings were shown at the Isle of Man Fine Art and Industrial Guild's annual exhibitions at 'The Palace' in Douglas between 1889-1899. They were also exhibited at the Royal Academy in London and the Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh between 1894 and 1939.

Baillie Scott spent his latter years in Devon and Cornwall. He died in Brighton, Sussex, England, on 10 February 1945

The Royal Institute of British Architects in London has a collection of Baillie Scott's architectural drawings; and examples of his drawings and designs for furniture and furnishings are held at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London and the Manx Museum in Douglas, Isle of Man]
