Conder, Alfred Rowland 1880 - 1955

Alfred Rowland Conder was born in Hornsey, Middlesex, England on 22 January 1880 and was articled to his father, Alfred Conder (1845-1931) in London from 1897 to 1900. He also attended the Architectural Association Schools in London.  He was an improver with George Halford Fellowes Prynne (1853-1927) and with John Belcher (1841-1913), and was employed as an assistant to Sir Aston Webb (1849-1940) from 1901.

He qualified as an architect in 1902 and was elected an Associate of the Royal Institute of British Architects (ARIBA) later that year.  He commenced independent practice as an architect in London in Westminster, London in 1907 and was appointed District Surveyor, Greenwich and Woolwich and Surveyor to the London Hydraulic Power Co.  He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Institute of the Royal Institute of British Architects (FRIBA) in 1923. During World War One he served in the Royal Flying Corps.

His address was given as Palace Chambers, 9 Bridge Street, Westminster, London and 70 Coolhurst Road, Crouch End, London in 1902; 48 Bedford Row, London in 1908 and 1915; 101, Hillfleld Avenue, Hornsey, Middlesex in 1914; 42, Cecile Park, Crouch End, London in 1923 and 1930; 55 Whitehall, London in 1935 and 1939; and Oak Lodge, Rowben Close, Totteridge, London in 1936 and 1955.  He died in Hendon, Middlesex on 1 December 1955.
