Robert Dixon was born in Kexbrough, Yorkshire, England on 18 January 1852 and was articled to William Perkins (?-1874) in Leeds, Yorkshire from 1867 to 1872. He commenced independent practice in Barnsley in Barnsley. By the early 1900s he was in partnership with his brother, William (Willie) Dixon (1862-1923) in Barnsley as R. & W. Dixon.
Robert Dixon was elected a Licentiate of the Royal Institute of British Architects (LRIBA) in 1911. He died in Barnsley, Yorkshire on 4 July 1926.
