Goodhart-Rendel, Harry Stuart 1887 - 1959

H. S. Goodhart-Rendal

Harry Stuart Goodhart-Rendel [also known as H.S. Goodhart-Rendel] was born, Harry Stuart Goodhart in Cambridge, England, on 29 May 1887. [He changed his name in 1902.  His father had died in 1895 and Rendel was his mother's maiden name]. As a child (from the age of 12) he grew up in a house completed by Edwin Lutyens (Chinthurst Hill, near Guildford, Surrey), which may have fostered his later interest in architecture. An accomplished composer, Goodhart-Rendal studied music at Trinity College, Cambridge (1905-09, B.Mus., 1909). While still a student he provided designs for a commercial building in Calcutta, and following his graduation pursued a career in architecture.

He was influenced by the progressive German architects in his early work, evident in 'The Pantiles', a house in Englefield Green, Surrey, which he designed for Miss Sophie Weisse and Donald Tovey in 1911. In 1912-13 Goodhart-Rendel designed an office for himself at 60 Tufton Street, London.

Between 1915 and 1919 he served in the Army. He then resumed his architectural practice in Tufton Street.  Among his most important architectural projects during the 1920s and 1930s were Broad Oak End in Bramfield, Herfordshire (1921-23), additions to Tetton House in Taunton, Somerset (1924-26), Hay's Wharf in London (1929-31), St. Wilfred's in Brighton, Sussex (1932-34), and Prince's House in Brighton, Sussex (1934-35).

Between the mid-1930s and the mid-1950s he was in partnership with Herbert Lewis Curtis (1894-1972) in London. They were joined by F. G. Broadbent in 1945

During World War Two (1939-45) Goodhart-Rendel again served in the Army,

Following the war he mainly worked on the design of churches, including St. John the Evangelist in St. Leonards-on-Sea, Sussex (1946-58), Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows in Liverpool (1951-54), and the Sacred Heart in Cobham, Surrey (1955-58).

Goodhart-Rendel was Slade professor of fine art at the University of Oxford (1933-36) and in 1936 was appointed director of the Architectural Association in London.  He was President of the Royal Institute of British Architects (1937-39), and President of the Design and Industries Association (1948-50). He was also vice-president of the Royal College of Music in London (from 1953).

Goodhart-Rendel was the author of several books and essays on architecture and related matters.  He died in London on 21 June 1959.
