Hellberg, Rolf 1908 - 1981

Rolf Hellberg was born in East Molesey, England, on 17 November 1908 and studied at Birmingham School of Architecture. He subsequently worked as an architect in Coventry. Together with Convel Designers Ltd. and display designer Gaby Schreiber, Hellberg designed the Runcolite stand for the 'Building Exhibition' at Olympia in London in November 1947.

From c.1954 Hellberg was in partnership with Maurice Henry Harris (1915-?).

Hellberg was co-author, with Ellis E. Somake, of ‘Shops and Stores Today: their Design, Planning and Organisation’ (London: Batsford, 1956).

He was elected an Associate of the Royal Institute of British Architects (ARIBA) in 1932, and a Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects (FRIBA) in 1941. He was Chairman of the Coventry Society of Architects in the 1940s.


In addition to his work as an architect, Hellberg was also a painter and exhibited at the Royal Academy in London in 1951. A painting by him, The Martyrs of Coventry' (1964) is in the permanent collection of Herbert Art Gallery and Museum in Coventry.

Hellberg died on 7 June 1981. His address at the time of his death was Dragonyard, Church Lane, Barford, Warwickshire.

Architectural projects by Hellberg included 4 and 6, Manor Road, Coventry (1953); and the Owen Owen department store in Broadgate, Coventry (1954). Projects by Hellberg in partnership with Maurice Henry Harris included a showroom for Coventry Climax Engines Ltd. in Piccadilly, London (1954); a Roman Catholic secondary school in Coventry (1955); and a remodelled showroom for AD Foulkes Ltd. in Coventry (1956).
