Edward David William Mills [commonly known as Edward David Mills; also known as Edward D. Mills] was born in London on 19 March 1915 and studied at the Polytechnic School of Architecture in London. After working as an assistant to E. Maxwell Fry (1934-37), he established his own independent practice in London. His first project was a church and hall at Colliers Wood in London (1937). During World War Two and for some time after, he was employed as an architect by the pharmaceutical firm May & Barker in Dagenham, London.
Following the war he re-formed his practice as Edward D. Mills & Partners. Post-war projects by Mills and his firm included the administration and staff canteen building for the Festival of Britain South Bank site in London (1951); West Greenwich Methodist Church in London (1954); Quintin School in St. John's Wood, London (1957); the Department of Social Security, Henry Giles House in Chesterton Road, Cambridge (1957-61); the Hall of British Industry and the Britannia Inn at the Exposition Universelle et Internationale (Expo 58) in Brussels in 1958; and Lockton House in Clarendon Road, Cambridge (1965-66).
Mills and his practice also designed numerous stands for trade fairs, including the Building Exhibition held at Olympia in London during the 1950s and 1960s. Mills was the author of a number of books on architecture including 'The Modern Factory' (London: Architectural Press, 1951), '1946-1953: the new Architecture in Great Britain' (London: The Standard Catalogue Co., 1953) and 'The Modern Church' (London: Architectural Press, 1956).
He was elected an Associate of the Royal Institute of British Architects (ARIBA) in 1937 and a Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects (FRIBA) in 1946. He was also a member of the MARS. Modern Architectural Research Group and the Congrès internationaux d'architecture moderne (CIAM).
He died at Gatwick in Surrey, England on 23 January January 1998.
