William White was born in Blakesley, Northamptonshire, England on 15 May 1825 and was articled to Daniel Goodman Squirhill (1809-1863) in Leamington Spa, Warwick from 1840 to 1845. He then worked as an assistant to George Gilbert Scott (1811-1878) in London from 1845 to 1847 when he set up his own practice in Truro, Cornwall. He relocated the practice to London in 1852. From 1860 to 1900 White maintained an office at 30A Wimpole Street, London.
White worked primarily a church architect . During his career he was responsible for designing or restoring numerous churches throughout Britain and Ireland. He is also known to have designed churches in South Africa and Madagascar.
White was elected a Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects (FRIBA) in 1859. He died at 24 Gayton Road, London on 22 January 1900.
