Withers, George Edward 1873 - 1945

George Edward Withers was born in Clapton, Middlesex [now London], England on 30 April 1873. He was articled to William Daniel Church (c.1844-1906) in London from 1889 to 1893 and remained with him as his assistant. In 1895 he commenced independent practice in London and from c.1907 to 1916 was in partnership with Percy William Meredith (1874-1938) as Withers & Meredith,   In 1908 they submitted an entry for a competition to design municipal buildings in Bethnal Green, London.  Their designs are illustrated in British Competitions in Architecture vol. 2, no. 15, February 1908 (pp. 102-103).

In 1909 Withers and Meredith collaborated with (?) Bell in submitting an entry for a competition to design an extension to Grimsby Town Hall.  Their designs are illustrated in British Competitions in Architecture vol. 3, no. 32, August 1910 (pp. 224-228).

After Withers' partnership with Meredith was dissolved, he worked alone until the 1930s when he formed a partnership with his son, Kenneth George Withers (1898–1944) as George E. & K. G. Withers.

Withers was elected a Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects (FRIBA) in 1906. His address was given as 40 Bergholt Crescent Hackney, London in 1901; Ingleholme, Northumberland Road, New Barnet, Middlesex in 1906 and 1911; 50 Cannon Street, London in 1906 and 1939.  He died on 10 April 1945. At the time of his death his address was given as Holme Lodge, Totteridge, Hertfordshire
