Forbes & Tate 1905 - 1930

Forbes & Tate was an architectural partnership formed by James Edwin Forbes (1876-1955) and John Duncan Tate (1880-1930) in London 1905.  

Photographs of Pollards Wood Grange, the Gate Lodge to Pollards Park in Buckinghamshire, and 'The Sheeling', a house in Chalfont St. Giles, designed by Forbes & Tate, are featured in 'The Studio Yearbook of Decorative Art' 1910 (pp.32-33), and photographs of a house at Windlesham and 'Brantfell', Gerrards Cross designed by the firm are featured in 'The Studio Yearbook of Decorative Art' 1911 (pp.26, 27, 28), and two photographs and floor plan of 'The Pillars', Northwood, a photograph of a house at Gidea Park, Northwood, designed by Forbes & Tate are featured in 'The Studio Yearbook of Decorative Art' 1912 (pp.17, 18), seven photographs and a ground floor plan of 'Little Pednor' in Chesham, Buckinghamshire, designed by Forbes & Tate are featured in 'The Studio Yearbook of Decorative Art' 1913 (27, 28, 29, 30, 31), a photograph and two floor plans of 'Paddock House', Gerrard's Cross, designed by Forbes & Tate are featured in 'The Studio Yearbook of Decorative Art' 1914 (p.24), photographs of the garden and garden arch at 'The Field House', Hagley, designed by Forbes & Tate are featured in 'The Studio Yearbook of Decorative Art' 1917 (pp.51, 52, 53), a photograph of 'Pollard's Wood Grange', Buckinghamshire, is featured in 'The Studio Yearbook of Decorative Art' 1918 (p.43), photographs of 'Dower Cottage' in Fairlight, Sussex, and 'Stonehouse' in Whitchurch, Aylsbury, Buckinghamshire, designed by Forbes & Tate, are illustrated in 'Decorative Art' 1930 (p.55), a photograph, floor plan and brief description of a holiday cottage at Pett, Sussex, designed by Forbes & Tate are illustrated in 'Decorative Art' 1931 (p.14), a photograph of 'Little Stiles' in Nazeing, Essex, designed by Forbes & Tate is illustrated in 'Decorative Art' 1932 (p.118), photographs of a house at Pett, near Hastings in Sussex, and a room with bunk beds designed by Forbes & Tate are illustrated in 'Decorative Art' 1933 (pp.17. 60); a photograph of the new servants' wing for Upper Terrace House in Hampstead, London, designed by Forbes & Tate for Mrs. Deen is illustrated in 'Decorative Art' 1940 (p.21); and a photograph of a stone and wrought-iron staircase at Hamstone House in Weybridge Surrey designed by Ian Forbes of Forbes & Tate is illustrated in 'Decorative Art' 1941 (p.52).

The Forbes & Tate partnership was dissolved in 1930 following the death of Tate.  By 1937 the partnership had been reformed as Forbes & Tate & Victor Smith, with Victor Smith [possibly Reginald Victor Smith (1885-1971)] as a partner. "Riverbank", an apartment block in Staines, Middlesex designed by Forbes & Tate & Victor Smith in 1937 is described in Flats: Municipal and Private Enterprise (London: Ascot Gas Water Heaters Ltd., 1938 pp. 206-211).
